Magnetic torque enhanced by tunable dipolar interactions

We use tunable dipolar-interactions between the spins of nitrogen-vacancy (NV) centers in diamond to rotate a crystal. Specifically, we employ cross-relaxation electronic spin pairs NV trapped enhance anisotropic paramagnetism and thus increase associated torque. Our observations open path towards mechanical oscillators detect paramagnetic defects that lack optical transitions, investigation angular momentum conservation relaxation processes novel means cooling motion oscillators.
